I got introduced to coaching about 2.5 years ago. I was going through another relationship struggle in my life & I was looking for ANY help.
I had heard about coaching before but never paid much attention to it. As a physician, I am skeptical about everything.
This was a desperate situation and I was willing to try anything. I did 1:1 coaching for a couple of months.
Later, I found the Life Coach School podcast. And I learned that my feelings are caused by my thoughts!!
Coaching is NOT psychiatry, psychology, counseling, or therapy.
I am a physician. I can tell you that human body is complex. Mental health is crucial and there are professionals who go through YEARS of training to help with mental illnesses.
Psychiatry is a medical field that helps with depression and other mental disorders. These disorders can be caused by medical problems, like a thyroid issue. It is important to seek psychiatric help to get the proper diagnosis.
Psychologists hold PhD degrees. They also go through extensive training to study the brain.
Therapists and counselors are usually social workers, who have extensive training and work with psychiatrists and psychologists to provide help.
If you think you have depression, if you have any thoughts of hurting yourself or someone, then please seek proper help.
Coaching is currently an unregulated industry. No certification is required to call oneself a life coach.
Coaching is NOT for mental illnesses.
